Nothing beats a fresh pair of eyes on your words
. . . except maybe a highly trained pair of eyes.
You’ve read your work 1000 times over, and so have all your friends and family, but you’ve taken it as far as you can on your own. Now you need a highly trained and experienced editor to push your manuscript to the next level.
Because you don’t just want to write a book.
You want to write a great book.
Let’s make your book the best it can be.
In my 16+ years working with authors, I’ve learned a bit about what makes an editor truly great, rather than just so-so. You want an editor who is . . .
trained
I have a graduate certificate in Publishing and Editing and a Master’s degree in American literature from Florida State University.
experienced
I’ve spent 16+ years working as a freelance editor, teaching writing at the high school and college level, and working one-on-one with students to craft their college application essays. More recently, I’ve been leading online writing courses focused on the craft of nonfiction and personal narrative (memoir). I’ve edited academic nonfiction, conversational nonfiction (self-help, personal development), memoirs, novels, short stories, personal essays, devotionals, and news/journalism.
approachable
Sharing your work with a stranger can be scary. But let me assure you, I am the opposite of scary. I’ve been practicing with teenagers for years, so I’ve learned a few things about helping writers to feel safe, understood, and encouraged, even as I edit without mercy. It’s kind of my superpower.
If you’re looking for an editor who will partner with you to make your book the best it can be, you’ve come to the right place.
Let’s take your book to the next level.
Hi! I’m Mara Eller. I’ve been editing professionally for over 16 years. I specialize nonfiction, including thought leadership and memoir.
I’ve edited dozens of nonfiction books, both traditionally and self published, everything from more academic texts (C. S. Lewis and the Christian Worldview and five others by this author) to Christian living/personal growth (Created for Communion, Breaking Free of Busy), devotionals (Powerful Whispers), political commentary (Stolen Youth), and memoirs (Unmoored, others forthcoming).
My favorite authors have a relentless drive to turn their vision into a reality—and know they need expert insight to get there. Whether it’s a life-changing approach to a difficult problem or a personal saga they feel compelled to share, they want to express their big idea in the clearest, most beautiful, most impactful way possible.
I see my role as partnering with each author to make their book the very best it can be, according to that author's vision. You'll never get a cursory "once-over" but instead will receive detailed comments and edits, and I'm always available to clarify via email or a follow-up zoom call.
Together, we’ll make sure your book meets or exceeds your expectations so it can get out into the world and start changing lives.
"It’s amazing how you can figure out what I'm trying to say but am not yet good at articulating myself. Thank you so much for your priceless guidance."
Jessica H.
"I love that you dove in so much and got into the weeds, which I was expecting, but I didn’t really realize how thorough you would be.”

WAYS TO WORK WITH ME
Manuscript Review
-
If you’ve finished a draft but haven’t yet gotten professional input, a Manuscript Review is the best first step. It’s the most affordable way to get comprehensive feedback on your entire manuscript—what’s working, what needs attention, and how to move forward on the path to publishing.
A Manuscript Review considers whether the book works as a whole—whether it’s coherent, engaging, and accomplishing its goals. Is it clear what the book is about and why it matters? Is there a clear throughline or argument tying everything together? For memoir, is there a strong narrative arc (with tension, stakes, and resolution)?
I’ll read your draft cover to cover and provide detailed feedback in the form of an editorial letter (usually 10-20 pages long). I’ll comment on global issues like your big idea, structure/table of contents, reader transformation, writing style, and market readiness. For memoir, I’ll assess story arc, character transformation, pacing, and overarching theme. I’ll also give you chapter-by-chapter feedback about what to keep, what to cut, what to move, and what you might need to add to strengthen your overall message.
You’ll end up with
a clear sense of what’s working and where the manuscript stands.
a roadmap of what needs attention with lots of actionable feedback.
concrete next steps to prepare your book for publication.
And because I believe in partnership, not just critique, every review includes a follow-up Zoom call to answer questions, brainstorm solutions, and clarify next steps—so you feel supported as you move into revision.
Investment: approximately $0.04 per word
Developmental Edit
-
A Developmental Edit addresses the foundation of your book: your ideas—their clarity, organization, and depth. While subsequent passes will consider the "how" (style, syntax, etc.), none of that matters unless the "what" of your book is rock-solid. That’s what the Developmental Edit is all about—and why no book should skip this step!
In this edit, I consider your content at the global and chapter level. Is the main idea clear and consistent throughout? Do all the chapters clearly support that main idea without gaps or tangents? Does each chapter have a clear purpose and enough evidence to deliver on it?
For memoir, I consider the overarching theme, supporting motifs, consistency and power of the narrative arc, any gaps in chronology or storylines that need to be filled in, what might be unnecessary or distracting, etc.
A Developmental Edit builds on a Manuscript Review, going deeper with detailed suggestions about exactly how to implement necessary changes. I’ll still read your draft cover to cover and provide a comprehensive editorial letter (just like in a Manuscript Review), but I’ll also go line by line through your chapters with margin comments. These notes will highlight what’s working, where you’re losing momentum, and specific ways to restructure, expand, or cut material to strengthen your book.
And because revision is where real transformation happens, I include a follow-up Zoom call to answer questions, brainstorm solutions, and map next steps. I also offer a targeted review of your major revisions within a month of our call—so you’re supported through the first round of changes.
You’ll walk away with:
a clear, actionable roadmap for revising your manuscript—chapter by chapter, idea by idea.
detailed in-line comments showing where and how to restructure, expand, or cut to strengthen clarity, momentum, and impact.
the confidence to revise with purpose, knowing support is available if you need it.
Investment: approximately $0.07 per word
-
A Line Edit ensures every sentence in your manuscript is pulling its weight—communicating your ideas clearly, powerfully, and elegantly. This should only be completed once the ideas and essential content are all on the page and in the right places (the focus of the Developmental Edit).
While a Developmental Edit focuses on the what of your book, a Line Edit focuses on the how: ensuring your writing is concise, engaging, and consistent. I’ll help you replace weak verbs with stronger ones, vague nouns with precise ones, and dull openers with enticing ones. We’ll eliminate repetitive or confusing sentence structures and make sure each paragraph is cohesive. I’ll also consider organization and flow between paragraphs and sentences (rather than on the global level like the Developmental Edit does).
I’ll often incorporate a few developmental comments as well, addressing anything that still needs a little more attention after the developmental edit. If the writing is particularly eloquent and concise already, I’ll usually throw in some copy edits (punctuation, capitalization, grammar, etc.) so that we’re moving the manuscript as far forward along the path to publication as possible in each pass.
My Line Edit feedback will come in the form of extensive edits in the manuscript itself using “track changes” (Word) plus comments that explain the reasons for my changes, pose a question, or suggest a larger revision.
As always, this edit includes a follow-up zoom call to answer any questions that arise, brainstorm solutions, and clarify next steps. I’ll also provide a targeted review of major changes upon request within 1 month of our follow-up call.
After my feedback, you’ll have
clear, polished sentences that communicate your ideas with precision and impact.
smooth, cohesive flow across paragraphs and sections so your ideas unfold naturally and your readers stay engaged.
a manuscript that feels unmistakably yours, but elevated to its most compelling, professional expression.
Investment: $0.05 per word
Line Edit
For each contract, we’ll discuss what kind of editing you need and determine the best approach to take your manuscript to the next level.
Not sure where to start? Many authors choose to start with a Manuscript Review because it’s the best way to get a clear picture of your manuscript’s strengths, areas for improvement, and steps needed to prepare it for publication.
If you’re still working on your manuscript or still refining your big idea, you may be a better fit for book coaching.

“Mara is more than an editor. She's a thought partner, collaborator, and fierce advocate for you and your words. She comes prepared with gardening gloves and boots; the woman is willing to get into the weeds with you. More than once, I sent her work that I knew lacked clarity and focus, writing I wasn't sure how to fix. Amazingly, she turned them into some of my favorite pieces I've written, never compromising my unique voice. If you are lucky enough to work with her, you'll not only share your story with more heart and distinction, but you'll become a better writer in the process. There is no one like her. Seriously, book now before her calendar fills up.”
Merideth Hite Estevez, author of The Artist's Joy (2024, Broadleaf Books) and Art is How God Loves Us (forthcoming 2026, Broadleaf Books)
“Mara is an extraordinary editor. She is a joy to work with and was so easy to collaborate with during my editing project; Mara is patient, responsive, caring, insightful, creative, fun, and productive. I have worked with other strong editors on past projects, but Mara brought something unique and special to the editing process. She understood me, my brand, my message, and my goals, and she cared about both my book and my reputation. We were always on the same page, which made the editing process smooth and efficient. She also understood my audience and was astute at ensuring nothing was confusing or unclear to the reader. Her suggestions and changes always added significant value to the manuscript and the reader's experience, and her expertise and enthusiasm were invaluable. Thanks in large part to her, my first book received an ‘excellent’ review on Kirkus. I could not have asked for a better editor, and I look forward to working with Mara on many more projects.”
David Allen Parker, Jr., author of Slam Dunk Job Search
“Mara was handed a book manuscript in need of lifesaving treatment; the raw material was there, but it needed a heavy round of edits to make it work. She did so much to transform it: structural notes to make it flow, meticulous line-by-line edits, and research into the material we were covering to help us bolster and strengthen our arguments. We got a manuscript back that was ready to print, and we couldn’t have arrived there without her diligence.”
Bethany Mandel, columnist and co-author of the forthcoming Stolen Youth
“I have benefitted from Mara Eller’s editing services for my last several books, each with slightly different needs. Whether she did basic proof reading and grammar checking or provided more substantive advice on better flow and communication, or even on how to rearrange material more effectively, her suggestions—as well as her “catches” of infelicitous prose on my part—have always been extremely helpful. I have used other editing services that did not have this kind of range or sense of partnership: they were more wooden and mechanical, less thorough, and did not ‘think’ their way into the substance of what I was saying in order to come alongside the project. However, Mara grasps what the writing is about and works on its best prose presentation. It’s amazing how she can improve a manuscript. I hope that Mara can work with me on many more books in the future. I highly recommend her to all authors.”
Michael Peterson, PhD., author of C. S. Lewis and the Christian Worldview and numerous others
“Mara is such a talented and thoughtful writing teacher! I've learned so many excellent techniques for improving my writing craft. I trust her implicitly as an editor, coach, and thought partner for anyone who wants to improve her skills and build her confidence as a writer.”
Ariel Curry, Acquisitions Editor, Sourcebooks
“I stumbled upon Mara Eller as a writing teacher and editor after working on my memoir for ten years—yes, ten years of adding and subtracting chapters, changing titles, and a gazillion rewrites. Mara’s input helped crystalize my theme, refine my voice, and strengthen my message. My memoir is finally published, and I couldn’t have done it without the skill and confidence I gained from working with Mara.”
Ann Averill, author of Unmoored: How an Adoptee Found Her True Identity
“I hired four different editors for a project I was working on, and Mara was my favorite. The pieces she edited came back nicely cleaned up with the clear direction they didn’t have before she worked her magic on them. She was so helpful that I decided to work with her for the rest of my project. Mara is a kind, reliable, trustworthy person with a natural talent for editing and story development. I loved how she could figure out what I was trying to say but couldn’t seem to articulate myself. When you work with Mara, you aren’t getting only editing services but your own individual writing education. Mara works one-to-one with you, and when she sends your piece back edited, she gives you detailed comments telling you what would work better and why. She is always available to answer any questions you might have. I have learned so much from her. Working with her has been a priceless experience for me. She truly is a godsend.”

“Your advice to add more personal content was greatly valued! It was HARD for me to go deeper and share these things, and I needed the push. I know added those details will make the book more relatable. I wish I had known about you for my first edit!! You were thorough and speedy. Thank you!”
Christa S.
“Mara is an absolute dream to work with! As a first-time author, I wasn’t entirely sure what to expect from the editing process, but Mara exceeded every expectation. Her keen eye and expert edits transformed my manuscript in ways I never imagined—and I couldn’t be happier with the result. Beyond her incredible skill, she delivers feedback with a perfect balance of clarity and encouragement, making the entire process both enlightening and enjoyable. It feels like I’m not alone in it anymore. I can’t recommend her highly enough!”
